In spite of being a month early and smack in the middle of open water season, we had 21 entries for this year’s state long course championships:
John Ashton, Murray Burns, Rod Clarke, Caroline Clarkson, Tim Davis, Dot Dickey, Donna Gadsby, Brian Garvey, Sue Harbottle, Frank Hayes, Colin McCraith, Margie Moore, Jess Noske-Turner, Bob Patterson, Primrose Ritchie, Leanne Sheean, Dee Sheffrin, Damon Smit, Barb Smith, Will Zou and I donned our temporary tattoos (well, most of us did), and represented the Dolphins with our usual enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Donna and Barb withdrew due to illness, leaving 19 of us to sprint our little hearts out.
It was particularly pleasing to see some of our newer (and younger) members making a return to the pool as Masters swimmers after lengthy absences since their junior days. I hope we will see a lot more of them in years to come. Will (who set 2 club records), and Tim smashed out some great times, particularly as Tim has only been training for three weeks! Jess continues to improve every time she dives in, breaking some PBs that she set the previous week at Malvern.
There were numerous club records broken, and Dot took 0.01 secs off her own National record in the 100m Freestyle. Bob Patterson set a state record in the 50m freestyle.
The Female 280+ relay team of Margie, Dot, Sue, and Leanne set a State Record in the 4x50 FS relay, but sadly, were disqualified in the Medley Relay.
We were 4th overall in team points:
Powerpoints 1473 (41 swimmers)
Malvern Marlins 1404 (33 swimmers)
Melbourne H20 952 (25 swimmers)
Doncaster Dolphins 792 (21 swimmers)
Most of us then adjourned for an early dinner and drinks at the Wood ‘n’ Chimney.
Thanks everyone for a great meet.
